On-the-Job Injury Response

Purpose

Establish a clear, consistent procedure for responding to any workplace injury at Spartan Plumbing, ensuring injured employees receive prompt medical care and all incidents are properly documented for workers' compensation.

When to Use

  • Any injury sustained while on the job, regardless of severity
  • This includes cuts, burns, falls, strains, dog bites, chemical exposure, vehicle accidents, or any other physical injury
  • Also applies to illness believed to be caused by workplace conditions (e.g., CO exposure, heat stroke)

Procedure

Immediate Response

  • Stop work immediately — your safety comes first
  • Move to a safe location away from any ongoing hazard
  • Administer basic first aid if trained and able (stop bleeding, stabilize)
  • If the injury is serious, call 911 before anything else
  • Call your supervisor as soon as you are safely able to
  • Reporting (Required Within 1 Hour)

  • Call or text your direct supervisor with: what happened, where it happened, what injury you sustained, whether you need medical attention
  • Post in Slack (#safety-incidents) with a brief description
  • If you cannot reach your supervisor, call the office main line
  • Medical Attention

  • For emergencies: go to the nearest ER or call 911
  • For non-emergencies: visit the designated workers' comp clinic (your supervisor will provide the location)
  • Tell the medical provider this is a workplace injury — this is critical for workers' comp coverage
  • Keep all medical documentation and receipts
  • Do NOT use your personal health insurance for a workplace injury
  • Documentation (Within 24 Hours)

  • Complete the Spartan Plumbing incident report form
  • Include: date/time, location, what you were doing, how the injury occurred, witnesses, photos
  • Submit to the office — they will file the BWC (Bureau of Workers' Compensation) claim
  • Your supervisor will investigate the scene and document any contributing factors
  • Return to Work

  • Follow all medical restrictions — do not push through an injury
  • Provide your supervisor with any work restriction documentation from your doctor
  • Light duty may be available depending on the injury
  • Keep all follow-up medical appointments
  • Important Notes

    • ALL injuries must be reported, even if they seem minor — unreported injuries can become serious and may not be covered by workers' comp if reported late
    • Spartan Plumbing will never penalize an employee for reporting a legitimate workplace injury
    • Ohio BWC requires timely reporting — delays can jeopardize your claim
    • If you witness a coworker's injury, stay with them and help them follow this procedure
