Confined Space Entry Procedures
Purpose
Ensure Spartan Plumbing technicians follow safe procedures when entering confined spaces such as crawlspaces, attics, large trenches, utility vaults, and any space with limited entry/exit.
When to Use
- Entering any crawlspace, attic access, or below-grade vault
- Working in any space with limited entry and exit points
- Trenches deeper than 4 feet
- Any enclosed space where air quality may be compromised
Procedure
Before Entry
During Work
Emergency — Feeling Unwell or Trapped
Crawlspace-Specific Guidelines
- Check for standing water, pests, and structural hazards before entering
- Use a drop cloth to protect your clothing and the customer's access area
- Never work alone in a crawlspace if there is standing water or sewer exposure
- Take photos of conditions before and after your work
Attic-Specific Guidelines
- Check the attic temperature before extended work — attics in Ohio summers can exceed 140 degrees F
- Limit attic work to 15-20 minutes at a time in extreme heat, then come down to cool off
- Walk only on joists or rated platforms — never step on drywall ceilings
- Ensure the attic access hatch is fully open and not obstructed
Important Notes
- If a space is too dangerous to enter (flooding, collapsed structure, strong chemical smell), do NOT enter — call your supervisor and explain why
- Spartan does not require permits for most residential confined spaces, but use common sense about safety
- If you are uncomfortable entering a space, you have the right to refuse and discuss alternatives with your supervisor
