Confined Space Entry Procedures

Purpose

Ensure Spartan Plumbing technicians follow safe procedures when entering confined spaces such as crawlspaces, attics, large trenches, utility vaults, and any space with limited entry/exit.

When to Use

  • Entering any crawlspace, attic access, or below-grade vault
  • Working in any space with limited entry and exit points
  • Trenches deeper than 4 feet
  • Any enclosed space where air quality may be compromised

Procedure

Before Entry

  • Assess the space — can you identify the entry and exit points?
  • Test for hazardous atmosphere if possible (CO meter at minimum for spaces near gas appliances)
  • Ensure adequate ventilation — if the space is enclosed with no airflow, set up a fan or blower
  • Inform someone on-site or at dispatch that you are entering a confined space and your expected time
  • Have your phone accessible and charged
  • Ensure you have the right PPE: knee pads, gloves, safety glasses, N95 mask, flashlight/headlamp
  • During Work

  • Monitor for signs of bad air: dizziness, headache, nausea, unusual odors
  • If you feel ANY symptoms of bad air, exit immediately
  • Keep your exit path clear at all times — do not block it with tools or materials
  • Do not exceed your physical limits — crawlspaces and attics are physically demanding
  • Stay hydrated, especially in hot attics during summer
  • Emergency — Feeling Unwell or Trapped

  • Exit the space immediately if you feel dizzy, nauseated, or short of breath
  • If you cannot exit, call 911 and your supervisor
  • Do NOT have an untrained person enter the space to rescue you — wait for fire/rescue
  • Move to fresh air as soon as you exit
  • Crawlspace-Specific Guidelines

    • Check for standing water, pests, and structural hazards before entering
    • Use a drop cloth to protect your clothing and the customer's access area
    • Never work alone in a crawlspace if there is standing water or sewer exposure
    • Take photos of conditions before and after your work

    Attic-Specific Guidelines

    • Check the attic temperature before extended work — attics in Ohio summers can exceed 140 degrees F
    • Limit attic work to 15-20 minutes at a time in extreme heat, then come down to cool off
    • Walk only on joists or rated platforms — never step on drywall ceilings
    • Ensure the attic access hatch is fully open and not obstructed

    Important Notes

    • If a space is too dangerous to enter (flooding, collapsed structure, strong chemical smell), do NOT enter — call your supervisor and explain why
    • Spartan does not require permits for most residential confined spaces, but use common sense about safety
    • If you are uncomfortable entering a space, you have the right to refuse and discuss alternatives with your supervisor
