Purpose
Installation procedure for tankless water heater systems.
When to Use
- New tankless installation or tank-to-tankless conversion approved by customer
Procedure
Verify unit specs match the estimate and home demand requirements
Assess gas line sizing — tankless units require higher BTU capacity than tank heaters
Plan venting route — most tankless units require direct vent (intake and exhaust)
Protect the home with shoe covers and drop cloths throughout
Remove old equipment and prepare the installation location
Mount the unit per manufacturer specs — proper clearances and support
Run gas line (must be properly sized for BTU requirement), water lines, and condensate drain
Install venting with proper pitch (1/8 inch per foot toward unit for condensate drainage)
Secure vent hangers every 4 feet to prevent sagging
Connect condensate drain to approved drain point
Fill system and check all connections for leaks
Perform gas leak test on all connections
Power on and run through startup sequence per manufacturer
CO test at exhaust termination
Verify proper water temperature at fixtures
Set up recirculation system if included in the scope
Register warranty with manufacturer
Apply Spartan installation stickerImportant Notes
- Gas line sizing is critical — undersized gas line will cause poor performance and error codes
- Vent pitch matters — improper pitch causes condensate pooling and error codes (like Navien 110-01)
- Condensate is acidic — route to an approved drain, not directly onto concrete or soil
- Annual descaling maintenance should be recommended and scheduled
- Customer education is important — explain how tankless differs from their old tank unit
