Garbage Disposal Replacement

Purpose

Procedures for garbage disposal replacement.

When to Use

  • Disposal motor has failed, body is corroded through, or customer wants an upgrade

Procedure

  • Shut off power — turn off breaker or unplug unit
  • Disconnect dishwasher drain hose if connected
  • Disconnect discharge pipe
  • Rotate the disposal to unlock from the mounting ring
  • If replacing with same brand, the existing mounting ring may be reusable
  • If new brand or new installation, install new mounting assembly with plumber's putty under the flange
  • Connect the new disposal to the mounting ring
  • Connect discharge pipe and dishwasher drain (if applicable)
  • Knock out the dishwasher plug inside the disposal if connecting a dishwasher
  • Restore power and test operation
  • Run water and check all connections for leaks
  • Test with small ice cubes to verify impeller operation
  • Important Notes

    • Always confirm power is off at the breaker before working on a disposal
    • Match the disposal to the sink configuration — check drain opening size
    • Disposal replacement is a quick job with good margin — keep common models stocked
    • 1/3 HP is minimum, 3/4 HP is recommended for most households
    • Dispose of old unit properly — take to truck for recycling
