Inspection Preparation & Scheduling

Purpose

Ensure install crews are properly prepared for inspections and inspections are scheduled at the right time.

When to Use

  • After completing work that requires a code inspection (water heater, gas line, sewer, repipe, etc.)

Procedure

Before Scheduling Inspection

  • Verify all work is complete and meets code requirements
  • Self-inspect: check all connections, proper materials, correct pipe sizing, proper support
  • Ensure all required testing is done: pressure test, gas leak test, CO test
  • Verify permit is posted at the job site
  • Take photos of all completed work before it is covered (walls, ceilings, excavation)
  • Scheduling

  • Contact the local inspection office to schedule — most accept phone or online scheduling
  • Request the earliest available date
  • Coordinate the inspection time with the customer — someone needs to be available
  • If the customer cannot be present, coordinate access (lockbox, neighbor, or be present yourself)
  • Day of Inspection

  • Ensure the work area is clean and accessible
  • Remove any obstructions that prevent the inspector from seeing the work
  • Have the permit and any documentation readily available
  • If you can be present, be professional and answer inspector questions directly
  • Do not argue with the inspector — if there is a disagreement, note it and discuss with your supervisor
  • After Inspection

  • If passed: document the approval in ServiceTitan, notify the customer, close out the permit
  • If failed: document the specific failures, create a plan to address each item, reschedule
  • If corrections are needed, complete them promptly — open permits can become a problem
  • Pay the permit fee and set up inspection (this must be done per the process)
  • Important Notes

    • Never cover work (close walls, backfill) before an inspection that requires the work to be visible
    • Failed inspections cost time and money — self-inspect thoroughly before calling
    • Each municipality has different inspection requirements and procedures — know your local inspectors
    • Some inspectors require the plumber to be present — check local requirements
