Purpose
Procedures for managing installation jobs that span multiple days.
When to Use
- Repiping projects, sewer replacements, major renovations, or any job requiring 2+ days
Procedure
Planning
Estimate the number of days and communicate timeline to customer before starting
Break the job into daily milestones — what will be accomplished each day
Plan material delivery to align with daily work phases
Identify which work can be done with water/gas on vs. off to minimize customer disruptionDaily Operations
Arrive at the scheduled time each day — punctuality builds trust on multi-day jobs
Brief the crew on today's goals and milestones
Protect the home daily — fresh drop cloths, shoe covers, clean paths
Clean up at the end of EVERY day, not just the last day
Secure the work area overnight: cap open pipes, cover open walls, protect exposed workCustomer Communication
Update the customer at the end of each day: what was accomplished, what is planned for tomorrow
If the timeline changes (ahead or behind), communicate immediately
Be honest about delays — customers handle bad news better than surprises
Ensure the customer can live in their home if possible: restore essential services (water, toilet) overnight when feasibleSecuring Open Excavations
Cover open trenches with plywood or proper covers
Set up barricades and warning tape
Secure against children, pets, and rain
Check weather forecast — rain can flood excavations overnightJob Site Security
Lock your truck and secure tools at the end of each day
Do not leave expensive equipment or materials unsecured at the customer's property
If the job requires leaving materials on-site, discuss with the customer where to store themImportant Notes
- Multi-day jobs test customer patience — communication and daily cleanup are essential
- Restoring essential services overnight (at least one working toilet and water) is critical for customer satisfaction
- If weather or delays extend the job beyond the estimate, update the office and customer immediately
- Chunking of install revenue may be needed for multi-day jobs — coordinate with the office
