Job Site Hazard Assessment Checklist

Purpose

Provide Spartan Plumbing technicians with a systematic hazard assessment to perform upon arrival at every job site, before beginning any work.

When to Use

  • Every job site arrival, every time — this is a non-negotiable part of the arrival process
  • Reassess if conditions change during the job (weather, new hazards discovered)

Checklist — Assess Before Starting Work

1. Access and Surroundings

  • Can you safely access the work area?
  • Are there aggressive or unsecured animals?
  • Is the property structurally sound (no sagging floors, crumbling foundations)?
  • Are there trip hazards (hoses, clutter, uneven surfaces)?

2. Utilities and Services

  • Where is the main water shutoff?
  • Where is the gas meter and shutoff?
  • Where is the electrical panel?
  • Are there any exposed or damaged wires?

3. Environmental Hazards

  • Any signs of mold, asbestos, or lead paint (especially in pre-1980 homes)?
  • Standing water or sewage present?
  • Chemical smells or containers in the work area?
  • Extreme temperatures (hot attic, unheated crawlspace)?

4. Work Area Conditions

  • Is there adequate lighting? If not, set up your own
  • Is there adequate ventilation for the work you will be doing?
  • Is the work area stable (no loose flooring, unstable scaffolding)?
  • Is there space to work safely, or is the area too cramped?

5. PPE Needed

  • Based on the hazards identified, what PPE do you need?
  • Do you have the correct PPE in your truck?
  • If not, get it before starting — do not improvise

Procedure

  • Walk the job site upon arrival before unpacking tools
  • Run through each section of this checklist mentally or on your phone
  • If any hazard cannot be mitigated, call your supervisor before proceeding
  • Document any notable hazards in ServiceTitan job notes — this protects you and the company
  • If conditions are unsafe and cannot be made safe, do not proceed. Explain to the customer and contact dispatch
  • Important Notes

    • This assessment takes 2-3 minutes and prevents hours of problems
    • Take photos of existing damage or hazards BEFORE you start work — this prevents false claims
    • If a customer's home has conditions that make your work dangerous (hoarding, structural damage, pest infestation), you can decline the job and contact dispatch
    • Share notable hazard findings with the team in Slack so future techs are prepared
