Backflow Preventer Installation

Purpose

Installation procedures for backflow prevention devices.

When to Use

  • New water service requiring backflow preventer
  • Replacing failed or non-compliant backflow device
  • Annual backflow test failure requiring device replacement

Procedure

  • Determine required backflow preventer type based on local code and application
  • Common types: RPZ (reduced pressure zone), DCVA (double check valve assembly), PVB (pressure vacuum breaker)
  • Install in the correct location per code — typically on the main water service or irrigation line
  • Ensure proper orientation and flow direction
  • Install shutoff valves on both sides for testing and service access
  • Install test ports for annual testing
  • Verify device is accessible for annual testing per code
  • Perform initial backflow test after installation (requires certified tester)
  • Submit test report to local water authority
  • Document installation in ServiceTitan with photos
  • Important Notes

    • Ohio municipalities have varying requirements — verify local code before installation
    • Only certified backflow testers can perform the annual test and submit reports
    • RPZ devices require adequate drainage — they discharge water during relief events
    • Backflow testing is recurring revenue — schedule annual tests for installed devices
    • Permits may be required — coordinate with the office
