Sump Pump System Installation

Purpose

New sump pump system installation including pit, pump, discharge, and optional battery backup.

When to Use

  • Customer has no existing sump pump and needs one installed
  • Complete system replacement (pit, pump, discharge)

Procedure

  • Determine optimal pit location based on water intrusion patterns
  • Excavate pit location — typically in the lowest point of the basement
  • Install sump pit liner (minimum 18 inches diameter, 24 inches deep)
  • Set gravel bed in the bottom of the pit for drainage
  • Install the pump in the pit — ensure float switch has clearance
  • Run discharge pipe from pump to exterior — route away from foundation minimum 10 feet
  • Install check valve on discharge line above pit level
  • Connect power (dedicated outlet recommended — GFCI protected)
  • Install battery backup system if included in scope
  • Test system by filling pit with water
  • Verify proper activation, shutoff, and discharge
  • Verify check valve holds
  • Test battery backup operation (if installed) by disconnecting primary power
  • Document installation with photos
  • Important Notes

    • Battery backup is strongly recommended — present with every installation
    • Discharge must route water AWAY from foundation — minimum 10 feet
    • GFCI outlet is code requirement for sump pump locations
    • Check valve prevents water from flowing back into pit — install on every system
    • Sump pump testing is a great annual maintenance service
