Sump Pump System Installation

Purpose

New sump pump system installation including pit, pump, discharge, and optional battery backup.

When to Use

• Customer has no existing sump pump and needs one installed
• Complete system replacement (pit, pump, discharge)

Procedure

Determine optimal pit location based on water intrusion patterns

Excavate pit location — typically in the lowest point of the basement

Install sump pit liner (minimum 18 inches diameter, 24 inches deep)

Set gravel bed in the bottom of the pit for drainage

Install the pump in the pit — ensure float switch has clearance

Run discharge pipe from pump to exterior — route away from foundation minimum 10 feet

Install check valve on discharge line above pit level

Connect power (dedicated outlet recommended — GFCI protected)

Install battery backup system if included in scope

Test system by filling pit with water

Verify proper activation, shutoff, and discharge

Verify check valve holds

Test battery backup operation (if installed) by disconnecting primary power

Document installation with photos

Important Notes

• Battery backup is strongly recommended — present with every installation
• Discharge must route water AWAY from foundation — minimum 10 feet
• GFCI outlet is code requirement for sump pump locations
• Check valve prevents water from flowing back into pit — install on every system
• Sump pump testing is a great annual maintenance service
