Gas Line Installation

Purpose

Gas line installation procedures for new appliance connections, line extensions, and gas system work.

When to Use

  • New gas line for appliance (water heater, range, dryer, fireplace)
  • Gas line extension or relocation
  • Gas system upgrade

Procedure

  • Verify BTU demand of all appliances on the system
  • Size pipe correctly using gas pipe sizing charts — account for total system demand and run length
  • Use approved materials: black iron pipe, CSST (with proper bonding), or PE for underground
  • Install with proper support and hangers per code
  • Install drip leg at each appliance connection
  • Install shutoff valve at each appliance
  • If using CSST: bond per manufacturer requirements and code, route to avoid damage
  • Pressure test entire new line: 10 lbs for 15 minutes — zero drop
  • Connect appliances with new approved flex connectors
  • Bubble test every connection
  • Restore gas and verify all connected appliances operate properly
  • CO test all gas appliances after work is complete
  • Pull permit and schedule inspection per local requirements
  • Important Notes

    • Gas line sizing is the most critical step — undersized pipe causes poor appliance performance
    • Never reuse old flex connectors
    • CSST bonding is a code requirement — improper bonding is a safety and liability issue
    • Pressure test before connecting any appliance — no exceptions
    • Ohio requires licensed plumber for gas line work
    • Permit required in most municipalities
