Backflow Prevention Certification
Purpose
Define the requirements for backflow prevention certification at Spartan Plumbing and outline the testing process for technicians who perform or inspect backflow prevention devices.
Who This Applies To
Technicians who install, test, repair, or inspect backflow prevention assemblies. Not all Spartan technicians require this certification, but those who work on backflow devices must have it.
Certification Requirements
- Ohio requires backflow prevention assembly testers to hold a valid certification
- Certification is obtained through an approved training course and passing a practical exam
- The certification must be renewed periodically — verify the renewal cycle with your certifying body
When Backflow Certification is Needed
- Installing backflow prevention devices on new water service lines
- Annual testing of existing backflow preventers (required by many Ohio municipalities)
- Repairing or replacing failed backflow prevention assemblies
- Any work that requires a backflow test report to be submitted to the local water authority
Procedure for Certified Technicians
Spartan Plumbing Support
- Spartan will cover the cost of backflow prevention certification training for designated technicians
- Test equipment calibration is managed through the office — do not use uncalibrated gauges
- If you are interested in obtaining backflow certification, discuss it with your supervisor
Important Notes
- Do NOT perform backflow testing or submit reports without valid certification — this is a legal requirement
- Some Ohio municipalities require annual backflow testing — this is a recurring revenue opportunity for Spartan
- Keep your certification card or documentation accessible in your truck
