Gas Line Repair & Installation

Purpose

Procedures for gas line repair, installation, and extension.

Gas leak repair, new gas line run for appliance, gas line extension or relocation

Shut off gas supply at the nearest upstream valve or meter

Ventilate the area

Identify the leak source (see Gas Line Diagnostics)

Replace the failed fitting, connector, or pipe section

Pressure test the repaired section: 10 lbs for 15 minutes — zero drop

Bubble test all connections

Restore gas and relight any pilot lights

CO test all gas appliances in the home after restoring gas

Verify the run length, BTU demand, and required pipe size using gas pipe sizing charts

Use approved materials: black iron, CSST (with proper bonding), or approved PE for underground

Support pipe per code: hangers at proper intervals

Install a drip leg at each appliance connection

Pressure test the entire new line before connecting appliances

Connect appliances with new approved flex connectors

Leak test all connections

CSST must be properly bonded per manufacturer requirements and local code

Route CSST to avoid sharp edges and potential damage

Use approved fittings only — manufacturer-specific

Mark CSST location behind walls to prevent accidental puncture during future work

Gas line work is safety-critical — double-check every connection
Never reuse old flex connectors — always install new
Pressure testing is mandatory before restoring gas service
Ohio requires licensed plumbers for gas line work
Underground gas line installation has additional requirements (PE pipe, tracer wire, depth requirements)
