Week 2: Tool Certification & Equipment Training
Overview
Week 2 for install technicians focuses on install-specific tool certification and vehicle/trailer setup. The install tool list is more extensive than service tech and includes heavy equipment used for sewer, repipe, and large system installs.
Prerequisites
- Week 1 Orientation & Safety Certification complete
- Tool inventory reviewed with Operations Manager
Install Tool Certification Checklist
Senior tech or Operations Manager signs off each area:
Copper and PEX Installation
- [ ] Copper pipe cutting, deburring, and sweat soldering (see Soldering & Flux Safety SOP)
- [ ] PEX crimp method — crimp tool use and ring verification
- [ ] PEX clamp (Oetiker) method
- [ ] Press fitting tool (ProPress or equivalent) — operation and jaw inspection
- [ ] SharkBite fitting use (when approved)
Drain and Sewer Tools
- [ ] PVC pipe cutting and gluing (primer and cement procedures)
- [ ] ABS pipe cutting and gluing
- [ ] Cast iron work — snap cutter and no-hub coupling use
- [ ] Manual and power snake operation
- [ ] Cart Jetter safe setup, operation, and shutdown (if trained)
Installation-Specific Equipment
- [ ] Pipe threader (if applicable)
- [ ] Reciprocating saw and hole saws for installation work
- [ ] Power drill for anchoring and strapping
- [ ] Laser level for proper pipe grade (1/4" per foot drain requirement)
- [ ] Pipe strapping tools — correct spacing, approved hangers only
Lifting and Material Handling
- [ ] Proper lifting technique for water heaters and equipment
- [ ] Hand truck and dolly use for large items
- [ ] Trailer loading and securing (if using a trailer)
Vehicle and Trailer Setup
Install vehicles carry a larger stock than service trucks. Production Concierge verifies:
- Core materials stocked (common fittings, supply lines, hangers, cleanouts)
- PPE complete
- Permit forms and documentation supplies on board
- CO tester present and calibrated
Completion Criteria
- All tool certifications signed
- Vehicle/trailer stocked to install standard
- Ready to begin ride-along phase
